Guidance

The cement is mixed on the ground and poured into a large container with a spout. A crane hoists the container to the rooftop. A slide controls the flow of the cement so it goes to where it's needed. One person has to guide the spout to the slide, and four men have to make sure that the cement flows. Other workers are waiting at the other end of the slide. So how do they construct buildings in your city?

  2. Construction is so hard for me to figure out. I still can't figure out how tall buildings stay up. Good thing I didn't choose construction as a profession.

  4. I am completely unaware of how construction works! I am always amazed by these large structures. Happy SkyWatch Hilda!

  5. I never care about construction, but this shot made me realize that its not easy to be an engineer. It takes all your knowledge in math, chemistry and logic and of course the trust of oneself combine with experience to do it. And the workers are just amazing! courageous huh! not very safe place to work.

  6. I hope you were wearing a hard hat. :-) Nice photo, it gives me the idea to photograph construction in the future. I imagine it's the same here but it's been a while since I paid attention. (my wife would say to to anything) :-)

  10. I think that is how they constructed the newest hotel here! Great sky, too. I'm still laughing at your mention of the bugs in Spanish moss on Lois' blog. I knew you would have a comment about that when I saw her photo. HAHA!

  11. Very interesting. I've never been close enough to see what they're doing when constructing large buildings. (Or if I was close enough, I didn't have time or think to study it.)

  12. Hi Hilda!
Thanks for visiting Calgary! I like this photo...but how did you get up so high to take it? It doesn't look like a zoom from the ground! Nice idea to put the crane against the sky.

  13. Intriguing photograph, Hilda. You seem to know quite a bit about pouring concrete.

I don't have a clue as to how they do things here...probably in various ways looking at some of the results.

And I don't know re: Skywatch, either.

    Dumb? What can I say?

  14. hehe. i am from the construction industry! basically, all construction methods are the same throughout the world. :) it just depends on the kind of method you want to apply.

the industry jargon for this is "pouring of concrete." the workers you mentioned not only make sure that concrete slides down, but ensures that the consistency of the concrete is assured. :)

where were you when you took this pic? i hope you were wearing a hard hat. :)

  15. I've seen them do that and it is quite a process, especially when the building gets quite tall.

  16. I am fascinated by construction. I have hundreds of shots, here and on holidays, of 'growing' building, better if tall.
