A slight disconnect

I've always associated this type of drawing and lettering with, well, punks. You know: non-conformist, rebellious, slightly violent teenagers. In fact, it's the type of drawing that I expect to see as graffiti in the seedier parts of the metro. What I don't expect it to be is a promotion for literacy. Bookay-ukay is the used-books store near our house. Yay for this new breed of punks!

  1. Hey! The sign just might convince a few punks that reading can be cool. ;-)

  8. Greetings from Juneau (Alaska) Daily Photo!
I agree it's definitely odd, but I do hope it works and reaches those who have difficulty reading.

I didn't learn to read until I was in 7th grade (12), struggled through my youth to become a better reader, and went on to be a teacher. Possibilities are endless if we are willing to persevere.

Thanks for commenting on Marcel's blog "Sitka Daily Photo." I, too, hope he keeps it active and updates us once in a while.
    Have a great day!

  12. I suppose the idea is to appeal to teenagers, and get them interested in reading and books. Its a striking advert.

  13. a nice example of an adoption of a peripheral cultural symbol by the main stream ... it's a widespread symptom in a globalized world, Hilda.

I like the keen observation of of cultural symbols you show in this photo.
