- This section of the city dates back to 1588. The Titular Patroness of this church is Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, whose statue was brought from Spain in 1624 by Rev. Juan Guevara, O.S.A. The British landed their troops near these shores in 1762 and used the church of Malate for protection for their rear-guard in the capture of Manila. This church was greatly damaged by the earthquake of June 3, 1863 and was rebuilt by Rev. Francisco Cuadrado, O.S.A. The parish has been under the successive administration of the Augustinians, the secular clergy, the Redemptorists, and the Columbans.

Our Lady of the Remedies
From the 1937 marker on the Malate Church in the City of Manila, imprinted with the seal of the Historical Research and Markers Committee:
Massive looking church, quite different from ours, as the bell towers are incorporated in the walls.
ReplyDeleteimpressionnante cette église, on dirait un fort.
ReplyDeletethis impressive church, it looks like a fort.
Looks like a bit of cleaning on the outside would bring it back to its original beauty, but it still looks pretty nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful building, I just love old building with a lot of history.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very beautiful old church. I would love to see what it looks like on the inside!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful old church. I can see why the British used it as a strongpoint -- it's massive.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of stone is this church made from? It looks like it could use a good sandblasting, but that might take away some of the charm.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look like a church, it looks like a fort/castle of some sort. It's possible it could have been built for that reason so long ago...maybe churches could play that double role.
ReplyDeleteThis is an astonishing building! Now I must see the inside. Old buildings are so interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteI love beautiful old churches like this.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness is this Malate Cathedral? My parents were married here! So was my aunt! (I was the flower girl at my aunt's wedding.) Wow!
ReplyDeleteexceptionally beautiful building and you've really captured it Hilda! Love it.
ReplyDeleteHalcyon:
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't know and there's hardly any information about it on the web. I won't be surprised if it was adobe.
Tamera:
That's probably the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros. Very popular as a wedding church.
Love this artchitecture.
ReplyDeleteLove this capture! This church will always be special to me.
ReplyDeleteHilda -- Nope, it was Malate where they were married! I had my mom check your blog and she confirmed. How cool that you posted a picture of it. She thought so too.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive facade -- I kind of like the character that the "soot" gives. Looks almost like a graphite drawing.
ReplyDeleteWow, I haven't seen anything like that here in Pasadena, Ca. Good of you to take such a great picture of it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog yesterday!
