For the life of me, I just can't get a decent photo of my own grade school and high school, Holy Family. Barbed wire runs on top of its walls and utility cables are thick all over. This is just the side of the school; the cables at the front, which is in our neighborhood's main street, are even worse. Holy Family School is run by the Siervas de San Jose (Servants of Saint Joseph), a religious missionary congregation founded in Spain, and is an all-girls school. It is separated from Claret School, an all-boys grade school and high school, by a single, low wall. Needless to say, a lot of heckling and eyelash-batting goes on around that wall during recess and lunch break.

  1. I know how you feel when unsightly wires, fences etc cross in front and appear on photos. Did your school always have these or were they a later addition?
I remember Mum saying her Grandma said you could always tell a Catholic Church because they were always open. Not so today though, ours gets closed by 3.00pm in the afternoon. Because of vandals. It's a sad place I think sometimes the world has become.
    Have a nice day.☺

  4. I think your picture is great, it's a traditional, beautiful and huge school.
About church close doors during afternoons, it's a double sad feeling, about it, because we can go and pray with freedom and about those vandals, so sad but it's happing in many places, big cities, unfortunately.
Here I use to go for praying in the mornings ( at the Church near our place) but the church is open all day long.
hugs and a lovely day to you

  5. Barbed wire? I can understand the utility cables, but why the need for barbed wire??

  6. I find it hard to believe that there is much activity going on along that wall between the two schools! It is neat that you are still in the same neighborhood as the school.

  7. I don't like the look of wires either, but I do enjoy what they bring to our towns and cities. I'll see if I can get you that table - thank you for not mentioning the dust!

  8. So, the barbed wire IS intended to keep those bad girls away from the saintly boys. I knew it. Any first-person stories to relate??

LOL! When we finally meet in person, I'll tell you a story. :)

    Halcyon:
The walls are quite low and easy to climb so the chicken wire fence and barbed wire were added to the wall to increase the height — cheaper that way. They're to keep unseemly people out, which is why they are angled towards the sidewalk. I guess the nuns figure it's better to be safe than sorry, especially in an all-girls school.

  10. My school is the same. It sits right against an interstate and electric plant - not very scenic!

  11. My jr. high didn't have barbed wire, but they had these iron rods sticking out under the windows (suicide prevention?) which were really ugly. But I'm sure there are plenty of sweet memories there ;D
