A god's plaything

If Jupiter (Zeus) decides to take the form of your husband, will you be able to tell the difference? Alcmene didn't when Jupiter appeared to her as her husband, the Theban general Amphitryon, in Heinrich von Kleist's 1807 play. Mostly a comedy but one which raises metaphysical questions, "Amphitryon" was translated into Tagalog by Jerry Respeto and it was performed by the University of the Philippines' resident student theater group Dulaang U.P. last September as their third play of the season.

I like this photo and I wouldn't mind if my husband had the power of Zeus! :)

Your photo makes me want to see the play. Oh, but wait, now it's in Tagalog ...
Kleist, haven't thought about him since my German lit classes in the 60s. :)

Thank you for your comment on my site, Hilda. That's the beauty of this community. We get such an intimate view of places around the world, we get to admire and 'try on' other lives as our friends show us their favorite places. This is such a dramatic image. I wonder, do you think you could tell the difference between your husband and Jupiter?

Many women in ancient Greece had dreamed and hoped that their lousy husbands are really disguised gods. Kind of save the marriage therapy :)

Yup, Jacob said it all! I'd love to have this bed in my bedroom, though I'd probably get tangled up... :-D

Beautiful image, really magical. (Having no husband, it would be easier for me to spot the naughty god...)
