Ask for your receipt

Back in 2003, our Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced that they will be requiring taxis to install meters that could issue receipts. In 2006, our Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) got into the act and announced that they will require taxis to issue official receipts. Last year, both regulations finally began getting implemented, with February 2010 as the stated deadline for full compliance from taxi operators. But since they would still rather not declare their full income because of taxes, drivers will not automatically print and issue a receipt unless the passenger asks for it. Neither do some stores, actually. My title is taken from the sign that the BIR requires shops to post. Maybe they should make a small one for taxis.

I ALWAYS ask for a receipt if one isn't offered. How can you reconcile your bank account without them?

Taxis everywhere skim a little here and a little there. I suppose it makes sense that at least some of the burden should fall upon us as customers. People want accountability more and more these days.

Yeah, I'll bet there was some resistance to this...at least the cab drivers have a loophole. I guess I'd probably not care much if I had a receipt or not unless it was a chargeable business expense...

I hope your government is helping defray the cost of the equipment necessary for compliance.

You're supposed to do the same thing where I live, but nobody does ask for a receipt. I do ask for one most of the time but that's only because I forgot some of my things in the taxi on some occasions and now I want to make sure that I know the taxi's identification in case that happens again.

Interesting, although I am having trouble making the connection of a printed receipt and tax revenue. If the driver has a metered machine, I would think that all revenue is 'monitored' thru the machine providing an accurate accounting of revenue from which taxes can be paid. Hmmmmm!

Same here! If you don't ask they allways 'forget' about it...

But if we ride with you, Hilda, then we don't have to ask for a receipt, right?! Or does your car have such a machine, too?

Very interesting. I've never gotten a receipt from a taxi. Perhaps I have something new to look forward to.

I have never took a taxi here, so I don't know how they do. Somewhere else in Italy I know they are quite dishonest...
