Bargains

A tiny lane between two commercial buildings too narrow for cars but too wide for 'just' pedestrians was converted into a semi-open—roofed but no doors—bargain center, a baratilyo. The stall on the right is selling clothes: three pairs of shorts for 100 pesos (a little more than US$2) and leggings for 150 or 200 pesos. The stall on the left sells bags (the messenger bags go for 50 pesos only), underwear, towels (100 pesos for a bath towel), tie-dyed sarongs and pillowcases. Other stalls farther down the lane sell more clothes and all sorts of fashion and home accessories. If I need a quick (it's only one tricycle ride away from our house) and cheap shopping hit, this is where I go.

I love the wonderful abundance of brightly-colored things. Beautiful and fun!

An American friend of mine is dating a Filipino woman (in Manila, she works for the government) and he says your people are much more cheerful and loving than ours. He says they rarely complain, but make the best of everything. Useful skills, if it is true. I'd like to be more like that myself!

I'd really enjoy a rummage through those stalls. I'm sure I'd find something useful..

Very colorful display ... The closest type of shop we have in the US would be a flea market. Until I posted this comment I have note thought about the origins of the term. It is not preserved as negative. Wikipedia says the origins may be that "buyers and sellers may be as active as fleas".

There's so much crammed in there, and it's neatly presented, too.

One-stop shopping lane! I like the striped blue toned and the brown toned shirt behind the mannequin!

I've heard of bargain basements -- you've got a bargain lane. You also got a wonderful picture.

I love looking round stalls and markets - it's very different from store shopping, and you never know what you might find.
