First Filipino

Fr. Horacio V. de la Costa, SJ (1916–1977), Atenean, historian, writer, teacher, priest, patriot. The first Filipino dean of the college of arts and sciences of the Ateneo de Manila University. And the first Filipino superior of the Philippine province of the Society of Jesus.

This statue, a gift of the Ateneo High School Class of 1952, stands in front of the building which bears his name, the Horacio de la Costa Hall, which is currently the home of the Ateneo de Manila's Loyola School of Humanities.

This gentleman looks very much like a scholar would be expected to look. Maybe it's the glasses!

What a very interesting post, Hilda. The Filipino's of his time must have been very proud of him.

Thanks for your interesting perspective on the Lenten fast and abstinence of meat. We have that problem, too. Some seem to think it's okay to eat Lobster or expensive fish because it's not meat. That certainly defeats the purpose of sacrifice.

Have a blessed Lent.

What a wonderful gift and a fitting tribute to him.
About theme day. We hopped on over there last night and cast our votes. Let's see what happens. :-)

Handsome statue. Impressive that a high school class was responsible. Thanks for the heads up on the March theme day.

Hi Hilda - Re your comment on Ocala DP...we didn't get any plants because at our new villa all the yard and plantings are taken care of! Yeah! And that means I can spend more time on the computer!

I agree with Jacob, his glasses do add a scholarly look to this statue!
