Traditional, handcrafted products still abound in the Philippines, including Metro Manila. I saw these hand-beaded slippers in Binondo, Manila's Chinatown, and they were selling for only 285 pesos (just a little more than six U.S. dollars).
It is truly mindboggling how many hours people will do painstakingly precise and delicate work for a dollar a day. It's the daily pay a lot of people make in poor countries.
When I see something like that it always makes me feel guilty for getting something pretty for such a low price knowing the truth behind it.
ang laki pala ng patong - went to a pinoy store here that only sells barong tagalog and filipinia clothing, etc and mom bought one that is like the one you're showing, but in green, and we paide 12.99 US :)

looks like 'chinese slippers', my grandma used to wear this kind of slippers.
That looks like a lot of work for $6.

Hihihi...cocho! Mommy's favorite goes well with her terno!
Nice craftsmanship. They look so nice, it would be a shame to wear them and get them dirty.
Pretty!! Very elaborated for $6!
These slippers are absolutely gorgeous. It's nice that such craftmanship is still available at an affordable price.
elles sont mignonnes, et elles semblent si fragile
