Ungrape
I have already featured coconut wine and sugarcane liquor, and the deadly, distilled lambanog made from the sap of coconut flowers. Now let me present a more genteel locally-produced fruit wine. Bignay (Antidesma bunius) is a fruit tree native to Southeast Asia which produces clusters of little round berries. They grow wild in the Philippines and several companies make a light, sweet, slightly acidic wine from the ripe, red berries. Patubas (which is Hiligaynon for "harvest") also makes other fruit wines from duhat, guyabano and pineapple.

we have garlic wine here because we are so close to gilroy - considered garlic capital and they make everything out of garlic.

I don't think a wine would do well in France, Italy, the USA or other wine producing countries if it is marketed as 'The UnGrape Wine."

That's interesting, I've had more lambanog than I should admit to, and I've tasted some other Pinoy alcoholic drinks, but I haven't even seen this one. Hmmm... always curious to try anything once... I'll look for it. I think I'm with the others that the UnGrape marketing angle is a bit... uh... why? Maybe no one would know what bignay wine would be...
This sounds delicious. I'd like to come for a visit and sample all the options.

This is very very Pinoy Hilda! Though I don't drink, this is something I can truly be proud of! :D There's this Mango Wine that I bought on a trip to Ilocos and it looks really yummy. It's just on Display right now though hahaha :D

i usually have bignay leaves for tea,it's good for cleansing and really refreshing.
I'm interested. Is it shipped to the States?
I hear that the Bignay 1993 is the best. :) J/K Does it taste dangerously good?

Hilda I quite like fruit wine in fact I drink a local Thai red wine made from Maoberry.
It sounds very similar since its made from small wild fruits.
Slightly sweet and acidic too.
